Clean Heaven – 2006 Environmental Protection Volunteers’ Proceedings on the Tibetan Plateau

By Hui Ji

The Tibet Road is the main artery connecting Tibet with the rest of China for the transfer of material and human resources. Thus, it is known as the lifeline of the Tibetan Plateau. As of the 1st July 2006 opening of the new Tibet Railway, people are paying more attention to the environmental situation on the Tibetan Plateau. Even so, we see that biodiversity there has already been damaged; pasture land is widely degenerating; land is suffering from desertification; and garbage pollution is becoming more and more serious. These are all the result of the increase in human activity in this area and have deeply endangered the region's ecological safety. As a highly sensitive area, attention must be paid to the environmental situation of the Tibetan Plateau and the danger to the environment must be taken seriously so that the area can be protected over time!

2006 Environmental Protection Volunteers’ Proceedings on the Tibetan Plateau are:
1. Deliver green bookmarks along the Tibet Railway.
2. Clean garbage along Tuotuo River, the headstream of Changjang River.
3. Hold a memorial ceremony for Martyr Suonandajie around his monument in Kunlun Mountain pass; and declare the foundation of Kekexiu Volunteer Contact Center.
4. Visit the Budongquan Protection Station along Tibet Road, Suonandajie Protection Station and Wudaoliang Protection Station; and visit the staff working on the front line.

The proceedings are organized by Kekexiu Volunteer Contact Center, Wenzhou University Students Green Chat, and Leqing Green Volunteer Association. The six volunteers attending the proceedings undertake the charge by themselves.

Forty Volunteers Push Forward Environmental Protection along Tibet Railway

By Wang Heng

These days there is a beautiful sight to be seen at Geermu (Golmud) Station and Lhasa Station of the Tibet Railway. Many environmental protection volunteers in orange coats with unified symbol are handing out environmental protection brochures to passengers at the stations, telling them the important points to remember when entering Tibet, and sharing their knowledge about environmental protection. The volunteers come from different areas of China and have different careers, but they share the same wish: to spread green hope.

In June, the NGO Green River recruited forty volunteers from different areas of China, divided them into three groups, and sent them to different stations along the Tibet Railway, where they are sharing their knowledge about environmental protection with railway passengers. On 7th July, the first group of fifteen volunteers came to Salt City Geermu (Golmud). After training, they were divided into three sub-groups to Geermu (Golmud) and Lhasa to spread ideas about environmental protection at the two stations in order to protect the environment of the Tibetan Plateau. Passengers call them 'Green Emissaries on the Heavenly Road'.

2006 China International Consumer Electronics Show

From July 7 to 10, the China International Consumer Electronics Show was held at the Qingdao International Convention Center, Shandong. As the only representative of grassroots environmental NGOs, the GREENERA was invited to the great show. The GREENERA also invited GVB’s experts and the Fortune Group-Green Recycler to jointly participate in the show in order to authoritatively publicize serious hazards of electronics wastes.

During the show, GREENERA’s exhibition mainly focuses on the publicity of hazards of electronics wastes and how enterprises more effectively implement their Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). We hope that with vivid exhibition, hand-out of materials, and experts’ explanations, people will be aware of the concept of electronics wastes.

China Attaches High Importance to Environmental Protection After the Tibet Railway Operation

By Wu Yu & Huang Huiqing

The Ministry of Railway has identified that the Tibet Railway must be an environmentally-friendly line during the period of building and operation. It requested departments concerned to insure that the Tibet Railway operation meets the environmental requirements and reduces the railway operation’s effect on ecological environment to the lowest level.

Based on a special environmental protection project, the Tibet Railway operation has the following five key points: 1) further reduce the railway operation’s effect on wild animal’s movement and migration; 2) maintain the stability of frozen earth and plant’s growth environment along the railway; 3) monitor and cure the desertificated roadbeds; 4) regulate behaviours of staff and tourist in plateau environments and prevent environmental pollution by human activities; and 5) establish a long term environmental monitoring system and an emergency counter-plan for serious environmental accidents.

Tibet Railway Company’s person concerned said that with the laws and regulation permission, the railway department will restrict and regulate tourists’ behaviours and their range, persuade tourists not to enter buffer and core areas of the natural preservation zone, and try to reduce tourists’ effect on ecological environment. Organizations and departments concerned have made the strict and effective emergency counter-plan for environmental risk accidents in order to prevent railway accidents’ negative impact on Tibetan antelope migration, water environment, wetland, terricolous fauna and ecological recovery.

Heaven Mountain’s Snowdrops are Insatiably Robbed and Sold Underpriced, Possibly Resulting in Extinction After Two Decades

In the recent years, with the continuous recognition of snowdrops’ value in medicine, people surge to pick and dig Heaven Mountain’s snowdrops. With the economic drive, farmers and cowherds, local or from other places in the country, especially pick and dig snowdrops in their blooming season and then directly sell them or make bad snowdrop products. Additionally, some tourists steal snowdrops while touring. Due to a lack of fundamental knowledge of picking and digging, thieves tear up wild snowdrops, resulting in loss of their ability for continuous growth, blooming and breeding. Nuerbolati, the engineer of the Research Department of Snowdrop Program in the Xinjiang Technical Institute of Physics & Chemistry. CAS, said that without putting a great deal of effort into protection, Heaven Mountain’s snowdrops would be extinct within two decades.

With the snowdrops on the verge of extinction, the Environmental Examination Station of Bogeda Peak of Heaven Mountain will work with other departments concerned to go on an inspection tour around Bogeda Peak, close off snowdrops’ picking and transportation, and ban picking snowdrops in the blooming season from June to August every year. In the present, Xinjiang Province implements regulations to limit 500,000 boxes per year of snowdrops.

Rise of Sea Level Threatens Mangrove Forests along Pacific Ocean

Due to the rise of sea levels caused by climate change, half of the mangrove forests on some Pacific islands will be destroyed, according to research released by the United Nations (UN) on July 17, 2006.

The report, which researched sixteen islands in the Pacific Ocean, reported that the impact on mangrove forests would be greatly reduced if countries concerned take measures to control development on the seaside, reduce pollution, and restore destroyed or degraded mangrove forests.

The UN warns that the disappearance of mangrove forests can make island populations more easily subject to floods and storms, degrade water quality near the coast, reduce biodiversity, and damage sea life's living environment.

Mangrove, a kind of shrub growing on the seaside, is important for protecting the coastline and provides nutrients for fish and other sea life. People living on the Pacific islands not only depend on mangroves for food, but also use the trees to make textiles and fishnets.

Half of the world's mangrove forests have already been destroyed, mainly due to economic development and pollution. These days, what remains is being seriously threatened by climate change and the rising sea level.
